NARROMINE SHIRE
The Shire of Narromine  is situated 450-kilometres west of Sydney and has a
populaton of close to 7,000. The area's main industries are wheat, sheep, cattle,
cotton and citrus.
AVIATION
Narromine itself is famous for a long history in aviation. During the second world
war it was a training base (EFTS and 618 Squadron) and at one time its large and
well-maintained aerodrome was used as a training base by QANTAS.
Narromine is also well known in the gliding community as having some of the best
soaring conditions in the world. These conditions attract glider pilots from throughout
Australia, USA, Europe and Japan who visit during the main soaring season (September
to May) to fly with the commercial or club glding operations at the airfield.
The aerodrome also boasts a fine aviation museum whose tours also include an
inspection of the famous Wright Flyer replica which was officially launched at Narromine
by astronaut  Buzz Aldrin at an air show in 2005.
